Being Professional

Professionalism in the music industry is not only crucial to us as audio professionals; it’s also vital to our success! Being aware that drugs and alcohol has always been very closely associated to the music industry especially with genres such as Hip Hop and Rock we must refrain from allowing these substances to dilute our work ethic and negatively affect our professionalism especially when there is profit and gain at steak. As an audio engineer I can’t begin to tell you how many times I’ve been offered drugs or alcohol from clients, although they have good intentions I always decline simply because I view myself as a professional and I’m paid because I know what I’m doing, not to party. Don’t get me wrong I’ll be the first to admit that I indulge every here and there with a drink or 2, but once you let factors like drugs and alcohol contribute to the decline of your professionalism and overall credibility that’s when you know you need to tone it down and remember why you became an audio professional in the first place. What do you think???

Technology & Privacy

It is more and more and apparent that technology is being brought to new levels never imagined before, but as technology becomes more prevalent in today’s world we must first ask ourselves exactly how safe is this technology and if we are taking the right precautions to protect ourselves from it. A fact that is not commonly known is that we are almost always being watched and our activities and behaviors always being monitored, whether we are out in public or in the comfort of our own homes. Cell phones can track our exact location by simply just being turned on, vehicles can now track our driving habits and behaviors, and street cameras can record us at any time. Although this advance in technology is extremely helpful to solve and prevent crime, we must realize that there’s a fine line between using technology for purposes to better society and using technology to invade the privacy that every human being is entitled too. Next time your are connected to your smart device or computer just ask yourself if you would want your activity being monitored and watched!

The Difference Between Being Rich & Being Famous

What's up guys, for this week I'd thought I would take a break from blogging about ProTools and what not and rather talk about a crucial truth we must all realize if we truly want to impact the music industry. It seems to me that now days people confuse being famous with being rich, I believe this common misconception can be dangerous for an emerging artist! Just because you have achieved some sort of fame does not mean you're rich, in fact there have been many musicians who rose to great fame just to end up with financial debts at the end of the day. For example the cases of Mc Hammer and TLC showed us that know matter how much records you sell having greedy people behind you, mismanaging your finances, and overall being ignorant to the way the business side of the industry operates will all leave you with empty pockets. Furthermore being famous brings it's own problems as well having to constantly deal with paparazzi and always being in the public light must feel very exhausting and make the artist feel as if they no longer have a life of their own to enjoy. Personally I'm a very private person so I definitely would not care for fame and all the extra baggage it brings, but I am trying to make a living in this industry and enjoy a comfortable lifestyle. So it is crucial that you don't mix being famous with being rich!

Since last time you guys got a tour of the studio I work at I decided to give you a tour of the studio I live in!

Using Social Media

Using social media to benefit you and your artistry is an art within itself. Many of us engage in social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram on a daily bases weather it is just for entertainment or to promote your artistry. However a question that commonly comes into play is weather you should keep your personal and artist profiles separate. Many argue that your personal business should remain just that personal, while others argue that letting your personality shine through you artist profiles helps it become uniquely yours. Social media helps you interact with your fans in a much more personal, direct, and intimate way so it is interesting to see what artists choose to post on social media platforms weather it be just for personal enjoyment or to promote certain items. However one thing is undoubtedly for sure, social media is essentially a tool and how artists choose to utilize and implement that tool in their careers is left to their own accord. Personally I consider myself as an artist in every aspect in my life so I Choose to keep my personal and my artist page as one to expand my presence on social media because at the end of the day I promote who I am and what I am is an artist. But what do you think???

Avid Cloud Collaboration

As you all know Avid will introduce Cloud Collaboration in Protools 12. This new feature will allow Avid users to upload their works and share them with other Protools 12 users around the world. The idea behind the cloud is to take global networking to a new level never seen before. However although exciting some cons can come with the new Avid Cloud, for example exactly how secure is your work on this new cloud? As well as how can works created by different artists around the world be sorted out in terms of copyrights and royalty rights? Pros to the cloud however is that now that the vast Avid community is now connected through a platform of social media that allows the user to fully emerge him or herself not only in their own Protools sessions but the sessions of others who they otherwise wouldn't really communication or exposure to each other. Also another positive feature about the cloud is that now your own work can be heard by an audience not normally in your demographic giving you more exposure as an artist world wide. Without a doubt many factors will contribute to the future of Avid Cloud Collaboration but ultimately time itself will tell weather the new Avid Cloud Collaboration will be a success or failure. Lack of Talent, Saturation of "Artists"

Whats Up guys. As we move further into the future it is quite apparent that media and art itself is evolving. This evolution of media can be seen as either a positive or negative thing depending on how you choose to look at it. Media itself and the tools used to create it has never been more easy to get ahold of than it is now, this could be seen as a good thing because now it doesn't take thousands of dollars to create films, music, and many other types of digital media. However this leaves us with a saturation or creations that lack quality or just aren't up to par. The advance in technology has without a doubt changed the way we as human beings view, perceive, and create art. Never in our history has it been so easy for us to create something and then share it with a mass audience. Now I feel that we are conditioned to not only accept but enjoy art that is mediocre. Although the saying "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" pertains very heavily to art, I think it is safe to say that the bar for real talented art work has dropped significantly within the last 20 years. Another negative to the saturation of work that is being released is that artists with actual vision and talent our now less likely to be noticed and filtered through the garbage. However this is just my opinion let ne know what you guys think!

A day of tracking

Just another day of tracking, a few artists came to the studio last week to lay out some tracks so I could mix them later. Tracking is a long and tedious process but it is necessary, I mean how are you going to mix vocals if you don't track them right??!

Money Don't Sleep So Neither Should I.

My nights are getting longer and my days are starting earlier, but honestly I can't complain. In this week alone we've had 4 clients come in for recoding sessions leaving me with 12 tracks to mix in total. When artists book sessions they are told that there's a 3 day turn around for their tracks, which means I only have 3 days to make their material sound good. As you could imagine it's quite hectic considering that I work at RadioShack full time and that I'm also a full time college student, not to mention I also have a social life (I like to Party lol).

My sleep schedule is non existent and I fear that my school work might start to suffer as a result of my busyness. However I do consider myself blessed for being in a position where I'm already receiving work for something I love doing! With a little more focus and better time management skills I know that I'll be able to balance my priorities correctly and effectively. It's only up from here, Money Don't Sleep!
